This teacher research study explored the development of community college students' statistical thinking and reasoning as they worked on statistical tasks designed using real world social justice contexts. Examination of the research literature identified several components worthy of inquiry. First, while statistical association of qualitative variables is a key concept in the college level introductory statistics course, students often have trouble mastering the central ideas of the topic (Ben-Zvi & Garfield, 2004; Batanero et al., 1996). Second, use of real world data sets is recommended as a way to foster conceptual understanding as well as show students that statistics can be a meaningful tool that describes and explains phenomena in their world (Lubienski & Stillwell, 2003). Third, data from social justice contexts have the potential to engage and support student's statistical thinking and reasoning but empirical studies on their use in teaching statistics have not been fully realized (Lesser, 2007). This qualitative study investigates the way class activities designed around real-world social justice contexts help community college introductory statistics students develop an understanding of statistics concepts. Data sources included student's written work from five different types of class activities concerning association of qualitative variables displayed in contingency tables, video recordings, audio recordings, and interviews of focal students. An individual case study and a group case study are highlighted in order to provide a rich and robust picture of the teaching and learning experience afforded by the activities. Results indicate that students find the social justice activities engaging, meaningful and motivating. Students also appreciated that the data sets were taken from real-world contexts. The social justice contexts also provided the students with a sense of the nature of the relationship between the variables, thereby supporting their statistical thinking and reasoning.
