Riverdale began as a Native American campsite and pioneer settlement of members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The community was dubbed "Stringtown" because homes were threaded together along the main road and the Weber River. The waters of the Weber River and the rich, fertile soil made Riverdale an ideal place for growing crops, and it was soon filled with farms and orchards. It once had its own gristmill, blacksmith shops, and cannery and now has numerous businesses that draw tens of thousands of visitors each day to shop, dine, and play. Riverdale is more than just Riverdale Road, a major thoroughfare that connects cities in Weber County--it is a community of people, schools, churches, parks, and the beautiful Weber River Parkway Trail. The look of Riverdale has drastically changed over time, but the goodness of its people has remained.
Heritage Toronto Book Award — Shortlisted, Non-Fiction Book A popular history of the Riverdale area of Toronto, including Playter Estates north of the Danforth. In its first 50 years, the city of Toronto changed from a rough settlement to a booming city with a voracious appetite for land. The incorporated city of Toronto grew tenfold from 1834 to 1884 — partly through immigration, but also through the annexation of older communities. Among these were the former suburbs of Leslieville and Riverside, which were joined together in 1884 to become the new Toronto community of Riverdale. Later, the Playter Estates neighbourhood also became part of this community. Riverdale tells the history of the neighbourhood, starting with the Simcoe, Scadding, Playter, and Leslie families, who shaped the area throughout its early settlement, the American Revolution, and the War of 1812. It shows the waves of immigration from Britain, America, Italy, Greece, and China, that made Riverdale one of Toronto’s most diverse areas. And it tells the stories written into the map of the neighbourhood, revealing the history on display in its streets and historic buildings.

From the day in 1800 when George Calvert, father of University of Maryland founder George Benedict Calvert, saw the land that would become the heart of Riverdale Park along the Anacostia Trails Heritage Area, this territory has drawn a fascinating array of people and industries that continues to inspire visitors and residents alike. A small town of beautiful historical houses and thriving businesses grew up around the trolley car and railroad lines. Prominent politicians, war heroes, a Nobel Prize"winning poet, and a pioneer of the bluegrass banjo have all called Riverdale home. The memory of an innovative airplane manufacturing company that helped the United States win World War II still hovers like a ghost over the original factory at the north end of town. All of this is documented in the photographs and recollections gathered in Images of America: Riverdale Park.
The Riverdale Yacht Club is a small private association on the shoreline of the Hudson River in the Riverdale section of New York Citys borough of The Bronx. While author Ruben Mendez furnishes a chronicle of the institution, he also discloses valuable historical information about Riverdale, the Hudson River, the building of what is today the Metro-North railroads Hudson Division, and the creation of the New York-New Jersey Palisades into an interstate park. Founded in 1931, the yacht clubs first decade coincided with the Great Depression. During World War II, over sixty of its members served in the military. Mendez not only describes the sports and other activities that occurred on the clubs ground, he also provides thumbnail sketches of some noted members. They include Nobel Prize laureates; professors, deans and presidents of institutions of higher education; journalists; authors; diplomats; medical doctors; lawyers; and other figures of historical importance. Thus he has produced a work recounting a little-known, but essential part of the history of The Bronx and of New York City. Lloyd Ultan Bronx Borough Historian
