Memories of Ice

Book Three of The Malazan Book of the Fallen

Memories of Ice

The ravaged continent of Genabackis has given birth to a terrifying new empire: the Pannion Domin. Like a tide of corrupted blood, it seethes across the land, devouring all. In its path stands an uneasy alliance: Onearm's army and Whiskeyjack's Bridgeburners alongside their enemies of old--the forces of the Warlord Caladan Brood, Anomander Rake and his Tiste Andii mages, and the Rhivi people of the plains. But ancient undead clans are also gathering; the T'lan Imass have risen. For it would seem something altogether darker and more malign threatens this world. Rumors abound that the Crippled God is now unchained and intent on a terrible revenge. Marking the return of many characters from Gardens of the Moon and introducing a host of remarkable new players, Memories of Ice is both a momentous new chapter in Steven Erikson's magnificent epic fantasy and a triumph of storytelling. In its path stands an uneasy alliance: Dujek Onearm's Host and the Bridgeburners each now outlawed by the Empress alongside their enemies of old including the grim forces of Warlord Caladan Brood, Anomander Rake, Son of Darkness, and his Tiste Andii, and the Rhivi people of the Plains. The Orbs of Creation

The Age of Mysticism

The Orbs of Creation

Slowly the long line of robed figures made their way toward the end of the huge antechamber that featured the ornately patterned high arching doorway carefully positioned at the rear of the cobblestoned pathway, offering only one way to approach its uniquely stylized threshold. Each figure stood silently awaiting their turn. Each harboring their own thoughts of grandeur. Yes, for each had spent centuries in constant study. Blood, sweat, and tears expended often, and freely, in their ever-pressing efforts to learn what it meant to be counted amongst the chosen. Years spent learning through trial and error the arts that would ultimately prove them worthy of the trust that came along with such daunting responsibility. The prestige allotted to those who sought to become a member of The Order of Truth. Priscilla Whitestone stood ready to embrace the challenge. Ready, for she knew that she was destined for greatness. She and Benjamin Arcanus Trueth were the best of their class. The strongest ever. They were rivals. They had also been lovers once. Lovers whose mutual arrogance would not allow such an emotion as benign as love to take root in their callous hearts. No, for their one true love was power. Power that could only be had as a result of their mastering the sacred arts detailed within the Tome of Shades. Then and only then could what they both desired most be fully realized. They both would have the chance to show their mastery today. Today, all would be revealed for everyone to see. Yes, for today, all the robed figures assembled here would take part in the Ritual of Binding. That most sacred of rituals that would forever bind them to the land of Samarq. Today they would either become one of its guardians, or they would perish. Measures had been set in place to see to that. To each side of the robed acolytes was another group present. Those whose job it would be to ensure that none of the assembled peoples turned back. Not all those present were human. Still, the law was the same for everyone. Everyone must proceed. Yes, for the point of no return had been reached. None of them could turn away from this. To do so now meant certain death one way or another, or worse: madness. Even if one were to survive in that debilitated state, such one could not be allowed to live. That was the law. The throng of hard-eyed observers was here to enforce it. They would not allow any of them who had not completed their trial to live. Unless they were to exit through the door to the left. The door with the drawing of the all-seeing eye encased within the swirling crystal ball upon it. It was well known amongst them all that once one had learned the lore necessary to become an Acolyte of Truth, that one was forever marked. Marked for either greatness or marked for death. There could not be any in-betweens. She knew this for a certainty, for two of their number had fallen already.

Tormented by questions, the army totters on the edge of mutiny, but Adjunct Tavore will not relent. One final act remains, if it is in her power, if she can hold her army together, if the shaky allegiances she has forged can survive all that is to come. A woman with no gifts of magic, deemed plain, unprepossessing, displaying nothing to instill loyalty or confidence, Tavore Paran of House Paran means to challenge the gods – if her own troops don't kill her first. Awaiting Tavore and her allies are the Forkrul Assail, the final arbiters of humanity. Drawing upon an alien power terrible in its magnitude, they seek to cleanse the world, to annihilate every human, every civilization, in order to begin anew. They welcome the coming conflagration of slaughter, for it shall be of their own devising, and it pleases them to know that, in the midst of the enemies gathering against them, there shall be betrayal. In the realm of Kurald Galain, home to the long lost city of Kharkanas, a mass of refugees stand upon the First Shore. Commanded by Yedan Derryg, the Watch, they await the breaching of Lightfall, and the coming of the Tiste Liosan. This is a war they cannot win, and they will die in the name of an empty city and a queen with no subjects. Elsewhere, the three Elder Gods, Kilmandaros, Errastas and Sechul Lath, work to shatter the chains binding Korabas, the Otataral Dragon, from her eternal prison. Once freed, she will rise as a force of devastation, and against her no mortal can stand. At the Gates of Starvald Demelain, the Azath House sealing the portal is dying. Soon will come the Eleint, and once more, there will be dragons in the world. At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.

Memories of Long Pond

Northwood, New Hampshire

Memories of Long Pond

At the end of the Revolutionary War, James Steven James settled the land around Long Pond, a 101.9-acre, spring-fed lake tucked away in Northwood, New Hampshire. Once a working farm, the land was later divided and became Long Pond Estates. In Memories of Long Pond, author Irene E. DuPont shares the history of the development and the growth of Long Pond. DuPont’s family purchased a cottage on the lake more than thirty-eight years ago; it was a place where they could enjoy swimming, hiking, fishing, and just getting away from the city. In this memoir, she provides a plethora of details about this lake, including the stories of the James family, the DuPont family, and the other property owners who have made this area their home. Memories of Long Pond gives insight into the Long Pond area, a growing community that provides much in the way of history of family lives—with building, feuding, and moving on toward the future.

Burny's Journeys

Lessons and Confessions of an Aging Hipster

Burny's Journeys

It's one man's story from childhood to his mid-fifties and counting. He never went looking for adventures or answers to life but because of timing, coincidences, synchronicities, (call it what you will) that started early and have never ended, he has been blessed with a lifetime of stories and then some. He spent his first twenty years in small town Iowa before the U.S. Army decided that they had a need for him. It was February of 1968 and it proved to be a bad time to be entering the military. After a year in Vietnam he came home intact but a changed young man. He packed up a van and headed west with everything he owned. (Except for the baseball cards that his parents had already thrown away. Damn!) After joining Vietnam Veterans Against the War (John Kerry was their president) he went to D.C. and threw his medals away on the Capitol steps with a thousand or so other vets who realized that as a country, we could make mistakes and this time we had. He was thrown in jail in Denver with 78 other vets for simply trying to march, as an organization, in the Veteran's Day Parade. It was a tough time for people to stand up to their government but he felt it was important and so did many people. Those actions changed the direction of our country. "Maybe something like this" the author suggests, "is needed again today". After some bad relationships, he hit the road for 2 1/2 years without an address to call his own. He spent two fairy tale winters in Mexico and Guatemala where he explored caves, found untouched ceynotes, met many characters as well as great friends, and all the while, he compiled stories. It was then that he began journaling and has never stopped nearly 30 years later and neither have the stories. He had the most vivid dream of his life, which magically, eventually led him to his lovely bride. They have now shared the past quarter of a century together including kids, and grandkids. It's all there along with the lessons and confessions.
