Into Action

Irish Peacekeepers Under Fire, 1960–2014

Into Action

Into Action is the story of the Irish Defence Forces’ role as international peacekeepers since 1960. While primarily posted to uphold the transition towards peace in overseas conflicts, they have at times inevitably been forced to fight back against often aggressive opposition. Dan Harvey’s fascinating and accessible history follows the major military incidents in the peacekeepers’ sixty-year campaign, from Niemba, the Siege at Jadotville, and Elizabethville in the Congo to At-Tiri in Lebanon, and Durbol in Syria. These are to name just a few of the military engagements that involved supreme bravery on behalf of the Irish Defence Forces and, at times, ended in terrible tragedy. Dan Harvey’s detailed account of the military operations they were involved in reveal the defence forces’ effective responses to crisis and conflict; how they stood firm during ethnically-motivated rioting in Gracancia or intervened in the midst of a clash between Chadian government forces and rebel attackers, and how the Irish nation was halted into mourning in November 1960 by news that nine soldiers of the 33rd Irish Battalion had been killed by Baluba warriors near Niemba in the Congo. These are the deeds and tragedies that have come to define Ireland’s role in international peacekeeping. Into Action reveals the true story of this role and the immense courage that have underlined its operations from the beginning.

Visible Learning into Action

International Case Studies of Impact

Visible Learning into Action

Recently at the Visible Learning Conference, Professor John Hattie stood up in his opening address and said, "I’m looking at you all and thinking ‘What if I got this wrong?’" I feel the same way when educators ask to visit and I always end up in the same place – that Keilor Views is a living, breathing example that he didn’t. -- Charles Branciforte, Principal of Keilor Views Primary School, Melbourne, Australia Visible Learning into Action takes the next step in the evolving Visible Learning story. It translates one of the biggest and most critically acclaimed education research projects ever undertaken into case studies of actual success stories, implementing John Hattie’s ideas in the classrooms of schools all around the world. The evidenced case studies presented in this book describe the Visible Learning journeys of fifteen schools from Australia, USA, Hong Kong, UK, Sweden, New Zealand and Norway and are representative of the VL international community of schools in their quest to ensure all of their students exceed their potential for academic success. Each school’s story will inform and inspire, bringing to life the discussions, actions and reflections from leaders, teachers, students and families. This book features extensive, interactive appendices containing study guide questions to encourage critical thinking, annotated endnotes with recommendations for further reading and links to YouTube and relevant websites. Drawing on the latest research into the major principles and strategies of learning, this essential resource is structured into five parts: Know thy impact; Effective feedback; Visible learners; Inspired and passionate teachers; The Visible Learning School. Visible Learning into Action is aimed at any student, teacher or parent requiring an up-to-date commentary on how research into human learning processes can inform our teaching and what goes on in our schools.

Putting Knowledge Networks into Action

Methodology, Development, Maintenance

Putting Knowledge Networks into Action

The concepts and theories of knowledge management and networks are well documented. Yet there are few, if any, guidelines on how to implement knowledge management within an organization, especially focusing on how to manage knowledge in a network environment. This book visualizes paths that allow one to make connections between theories, concepts and concrete actions. It shows how to integrate these different roots into a holistic view on managing knowledge in networks. It develops a methodology which will support the reader to move concrete steps forward towards building and maintaining knowledge networks in his organization.

Policy Into Action

Implementation Research and Welfare Reform

Policy Into Action

The sweeping changes of 1996's welfare reform legislation are more than just new policies. They represent a profound transformation of the character and structure of social policy institutions in the United States, a shift from a bureaucratic, centralized mode for income transfer, to a "professional" mode aimed at complex behavioral change. The evaluation community has responded with a shift from traditional impact analyses to implementation studies that get inside the skin of this new, more flexible structure. Implementation research explores the translation of concepts into working policies and programs, and evaluates how well the administrative and management dimensions of these policies work, and how the programs are experienced by all involved. Policy into Action offers state-of-the-art thinking on implementation research from leading policy researchers and evaluation practitioners.

Turning Learning into Action

A Proven Methodology for Effective Transfer of Learning

Turning Learning into Action

Learning transfer is the missing link in training. Using conventional approaches to training, an average of just 10-20% of learning makes it back into the workplace and contributes to better business outcomes. With the current increased emphasis on efficiency and cost-effectiveness, such a dismal record is no longer acceptable. To improve these statistics and to make training truly valuable we must recognise that successful learning is not just about good content and well executed programmes but about finding ways to facilitate genuine behavioural change and accountability back in the workplace. This book provides the necessary tools to enable trainers, buyers of training and L&D professionals to do just this. It presents the new, proven TLA methodology, which acknowledges the important role of ADDIE in the instructional design process but takes learning a step further. TLA focuses on the fact that to generate significant behavioural change, consistent, systematic follow-up after the training event is critical.

Insights into Action

Successful School Leaders Share What Works

Insights into Action

Do you ever wonder whether researchers and professional developers really know what it’s like to be a school leader? Do you sometimes struggle to connect articles and conference presentations with the challenges you face day to day? For award-winning educator William Sterrett, the answer to those questions was a resounding yes. So he made it his mission to identify the most important issues facing today’s school leaders and offer practical, effective strategies for success. Drawing on his own experience as a teacher and principal and on interviews with nine distinguished practitioners--including Carol Ann Tomlinson, Richard DuFour, Baruti Kafele, and James Popham--Sterrett merges current research and theory with lessons from successful educators who have truly "been there, done that." Each chapter of Insights into Action carefully examines a particular topic of relevance, translating research and experience into replicable, sustainable practices and offering ways to overcome barriers to success. You’ll learn* How to be a more effective leader, including ways to turn your school vision into reality, become a learning leader, make professional development more meaningful, and achieve the elusive work-life balance; * How to strengthen your learning community by differentiating instruction and leadership, fostering a positive school climate, and incorporating learning experiences outside the classroom; and* How to face the challenges of today, including ways to infuse technology into your school community, gather and apply useful data, and turn crises both big and small into success for all. Each chapter includes Action Items and In-the-Field Activities to extend the discussion, help you apply the book’s insights and strategies, and enable you to realize actual growth in your school. In a job filled with constant stressors and challenges, it’s important to have a solid, well-grounded perspective.
